Why this book rings a bell in my heart now?
This book, Analects and Abacus (https://www.nippon.com/en/currents/d00274/), is The class book, written by Baron Shibusawa in 1916, who is a founder of Japan’s business platform and Hitotsubashi University (the first business school in Japan) where I belong to its Alumni. Indeed, I read during my undergraduate days, and after being a business person, but this book never rang my bell, like now.
After a new graduate about 30 years ago, I have been involved in investment activities in London, Tokyo, and Hong Kong where the rule of the market drives the whole activities. But observing many natural and human disasters and started to share the real meaning of “business and economics” in the classroom, I may have been a little matured to think deeply about the value of this whole society.
I may be not alone to come up to this stage of thinking. Even a company that my family member involves as management consider how sustainable growth and social responsibility matters. (https://global.nomura-am.co.jp/responsibility-investment/)
